چکیده

Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae) is a major cause of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in children, accounting for 10-30% of the etiological agents wor ldwide. Yet , the epidemio logy of M. pneumonia-associated CAP in Hong Kong remains unknown for several reasons. First, there is no systemic surveillance of agents causing CAP in place in Hong Kong. Secondly, serology was the mainstay of diagnosis until a few years ago, and the data provided by serology only reflects the trend of disease and it does not provide an accurate measurement of the magnitude of the disease, nor does it provide any data on antibiotic resistance. Thirdly, M. pneumoniae has always been perceived as a benign disease and it was unable to attract the attention of the health care administrators to implement a cumbersome surveillance system and put in resources to study the epidemiology, until recently.

Prevalence of mycoplasma pneumoniae and macrolide resistance in children with community-acquired pneumonia: a case study in a teaching hospital

Background: Mycoplasma pneumoniae is one of the causes of upper and lower respiratory tract infections especially in children, and antibiotics affecting the cell wall do not affect this type of infection. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae and macrolide resistance in children with community-acquired pneumonia in Kerman city. Methods: This cross-sectional study...

Antimicrobial susceptibility and analysis of macrolide resistance genes in Streptococcus pneumoniae isolated in Hamadan

Objective(s): Macrolide resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae pose an emerging problem globally. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of ermB and mefA genes (macrolide resistant genes) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method and to detect drug resistance patterns of S. pneumoniae isolated from clinical samples to macrolides and other antibiotic agents by E-test method. Materia...

Whole-Genome Sequencing of Macrolide-Resistant Mycoplasma pneumoniae Strain S355, Isolated in China

Macrolide-resistant Mycoplasma pneumoniae plays an important role in refractory M. pneumoniae pneumonia. Here, we present the whole-genome sequencing of the macrolide-resistant M. pneumoniae strain S355. The annotated full-genome sequence might provide a new insight into drug resistance in M. pneumoniae and can help pediatricians recognize the disease earlier.

Multiclonal origin of macrolide-resistant Mycoplasma pneumoniae isolates as determined by multilocus variable-number tandem-repeat analysis.

There was a high percentage of macrolide resistance in Mycoplasma pneumoniae clinical isolates in China. The genetic relatedness of macrolide-resistant M. pneunomiae strains was investigated using the multilocus variable-number tandem-repeat assay (MLVA). Among 152 M. pneunomiae isolates, the 137 macrolide-resistant strains were clustered into 15 MLVA types, indicating that the high macrolide r...

Prevalence and clinical manifestations of macrolide resistant Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia in Korean children

PURPOSE Macrolide resistance rate of Mycoplasma pneumoniae has rapidly increased in children. Studies on the clinical features between macrolide susceptible-M. pneumoniae (MSMP) and macrolide resistant-M. pneumoniae (MRMP) are lacking. The aim of this study was to identify the macrolide resistance rate of M. pneumoniae in Korean children with M. pneumoniae penupmonia in 2015 and compare manifes...

Macrolide-Resistant Mycoplasma pneumoniae Infection, Japan, 2008–2015

We evaluated isolates obtained from children with Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection throughout Japan during 2008-2015. The highest prevalence of macrolide-resistant M. pneumoniae was 81.6% in 2012, followed by 59.3% in 2014 and 43.6% in 2015. The prevalence of macrolide-resistant M. pneumoniae among children in Japan has decreased.
